Wildlife Weekend!

 Wow what a great weekend for wildlife.
On Saturday we went to Martin Mere for a couple of hours and were lucky enough to enjoy some superb aerial displays from a Marsh harrier. Luckily for us Peter had remembered to take his scope so we really had a good view, especially when it landed in the long grass at the side of the Mere. Also saw the largest Toadstool I have ever seen there. No pictures of the Marsh Harrier as it was just too far for my camera.

  The Moorhen had made such a neat little nest and was sitting tight.

 Rowan berries are to be seen in great numbers this year so there will food for the birds.

We had two rather unusual ducks down at the canal, larger than the others and a male and female.


 I spotted this Dragonfly hovering about and saw him land on a tree ,very well hidden but managed again to use the zoom to get these shots.

 He looks as though he is feeding on the Elder berries...do they do this?

            So it was wonderful to see so much wildlife within 10 miles of Preston......

The weather could not have been better and we made the most of the glorious sunshine and clear blue skies and explored the area around Ulverston and Barrow. I have been reading and throughly enjoying the wartime diaries of Nella Last,a lady who wrote for the Mass Observation project set up in WW2. She was real character and her diaries are so entertaining to pick up and immerse yourself into. We found her house in Ilkley Road, Barrow and then went on some favourite car journeys that she liked to take during the 1940s and 50s, one being the coast road route from Barrow to Coniston, via Spark Bridge a place ...

Fieldfare and a visit from Jack!

With the ground being so hard after the recent snow and ice I threw down some of the apples I had been storing from our tree since October. That was yesterday and today the fieldfare flew in and spent the day gorging himself on the them. We just about managed a few shots, as he was very shy and the magpies kept bothering him, trying to get to the fruit as well. I wonder is it the same one who came at this time last year? Jack Frost came too and left us a beautiful vision in ice painting on the gate . I well remember scenes like that from my childhood but then it was on the inside of our bedroom windows at Corton! It is a very good time for birdwatching , today I saw Goldfinches as well. Most of our snow has gone but we may not be out of the woods yet as another weather front of snow and low temperatures is on the way.

The Green eyed cat on the green furry mat!

Just thought I would share these photos of our cat Ollie who was so so happy that I put the fire on when  I got back from the shops this afternoon . It was a nice sunny morning and then suddenly all change and it went gloomy and chilly and breezy! Still these kind of days can make you get on with some  jobs you have been putting off for a while and that's  what I did, I cleared the study! Yesterday  while out shopping I found the cutest little Christmas decorations ,the little deer and trees you see in the pictures above . Best of all they were only 99p a packet and they are the only additions to my stock of decorations that I intend to make this year, as I have enough! I usually love this time of year, the preparation leading up to the festivities but with mum lying so ill and increasingly frail I fear that this Christmas will see us going through the motions and thats about all .
